Cruisin With Mom

My Mom, the learned-her-techie later in life mother, has a new word for the cursor, she calls it "CRUISIN" the page. Her true love is genealogy and she does so every chance she gets, sometimes in the middle of the night when she is restless, the ancestors of old call to her and she finds them jumping off the page and alive once more. The "links" to the past computer and from history, provide a world of fascination as she meets and greets those who have gone before us to make us who were are in our genes and in our budding ambitions. Thrills and chills to Mom are finding a connection from an email like one last week from a cousin who said she held her breath as Mom forwarded photos of aunts, uncles, grandparents and great-grandparents of whom she had searched for 31 years - the search had begun for this girl at the tender age of 16! It was just as exciting for Mom to supply missing pieces of this loved one's puzzle and she busily scanned all of the photos she could find and waited the response from the breathless one anticipating seeing the faces of the ancestors for whom she had searched for so long. How wonderful! How fulfilling! This is what drives Mom back to the computer in search of more hidden nuggets from the family tree!

Moms and URLs

My elderly Mother, how dear she is! Even though the tech wave hit her at a late age, I am proud to say that she not only did not let it engulf her, she is riding that baby! My mother, who does not drive an automobile or swim, can drive and surf the net just as good as anybody! She is my father's number one secretary in an age where young people are trying to keep up with internet jargon. Today she ask me what the URLs were, from my viewpoint on the other end of the telephone line long distance, it sounded like "Earls"! What "earls" are your referring to, Mom, I asked? You know, she said, and she spelled it, those U-R-L-S on the web search engine page? I began to giggle and she did too! What a different language we speak now, of earls (URLS) and e-messes (EMS) according to Mom! I'm always trying to 'cipher' what she's sayin!
